The Osage Orange, also known as the hedge apple, the horse apple, the bois d’arc, and the bodock, has been bombing Ohio the past few weeks with big green alien brains. Last weekend we were witnesses to a battlefield in which these green wrinkly balls littered the earth. Don’t forget to buy your 2014 SethSnap Calendar.
Big aren’t they! I was shocked when I reached the last photo. Can you eat them and if so, what are they like ?
I don’t know if you can eat them or not but they are quite heavy.
I’ll have to Google them!
Ha! The Osage Orange is a strange fruit!
Indeed
What tree do they fall from? They are the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen. I grew up in Wisconsin and never saw anything like them. Thanks for sharing your strange world with us!
I think it’s called the Osage Orange tree.
I’ll have to check that out. I never heard of it. It is native to Ohio?
No, it’s from Texas, I think. Wikipedia says they are now in all states and Ontario.
Wow. Nature has some oddities, but this one looks like it’s from another planet.
wow those are big!
Yes and hard too.
It is the Osage Orange tree, was used to make live fences for livestock. The sap and juice from the fruit can irritate the skin. The wood is yellowish-orange, makes good fence posts with natural resistance to insects. When the wood is dried it makes good firewood–puts out about the same heat as coal. Just don’t park your car under one of these trees or else it could get dented.
I never thought about parking a car under one of them, but you are right.
lol…you do have a way with words!!! interesting “fruit”…great photos as always…thanks for stopping by Seth…was nice to have you visit!!!
I’ve missed seeing you Heather.
I have a bowl of them on a table for decoration. Love the lime green color. But, alas, a couple of them are already beginning to rot!
That is a good idea Rusha. 🙂 Thanks.
Wow! They are BIG. Are they tasty too ? 🙂
Can’t answer that as I’ve never tried one. Someone else will have to answer that for you. 🙂
Perhaps I’ll get to try one myself one day 🙂
Wonderful!
Thanks Ellen.
They kind of look like a custard apple…bizarre :0
Yes, but it’s hard as a rock! 🙂
Dang 😦
Ha ha! Wouldn’t be funny if one fell on you though.
No! They are heavy. 🙂
Counter attack is funny 😀
Thanks Gallivanta.
I feel like I’m actually there! These are great.
Thanks!
You were nominated for the Sunshine Award.
Have a nice day!
Thanks so much.
Beautiful photos of the fruit in the forest. There is a cluster of these trees on my drive to work, right beside a busy thoroughfare. Those things are a bit of a traffic hazard in the city!
Yes I can imagine Tina. They are quite hard and heavy.
I’ve never seen those before. Are they edible?
According to Wiki, no. They are used as insect repellants.
This is what this man puts in his mouth?
No. People don’t eat them.
Thank You 🙂
Great photo. I was born in a house with an Osage orange tree in the front yard. When they fell to the ground, my brothers and I would throw them at one another. Yes: that sort of upbringing . . .
Ha.. great upbringing. We did the same with dirt clods and acorns.
While the simple and classic whisk is great for many tasks
in the kitchen, there are some times and some recipes that require
more speed and dexterity with the mixing, and that’s where these valuable devices
come in. For those who love cooking but hate the clean-up involved the Scrap Trap is an great tool to keep your counters and floor
sparkling and uncluttered. Toaster ovens, which can cook
anything from toast to whole chickens, reduce the use
of oil compared to a fryer resulting to a healthier
meal.
I’m not that much of a online reader to be honest but your blogs really nice, keep it up!
I’ll go ahead and bookmark your site to come back later.
Cheers
